Honestly I should've come here and read the reviews. I expected more from a zoo in such a large urban area. There's not a lot of exotics, and honestly I can see deer and moose anywhere. It's in definite need of modernization and maybe some better care. One of the iguanas had some massive tail rot going on but no one seemed to care. I thought the zoo in Edmonton was bad but this one is actually worse. It's borderline creepy, like an old abandoned camp

I am a zoo advocate for the seasons Autumn to Spring. Do not go in the summer months. It is too hot for animals and for price of ticket, not worth it. Such a disappointment for all. Also an unfortunate turn of events was the unavailability of the train. We had prepaid tickets for train through school activity. All in all an expensive walk about. Thank goodness for the park, or it would have been a complete bust.

  • I took my sons, ages 4 and 2, to the Greater Vancouver Zoo on Father's Day this year. Upon arriving, I received free admission as one of the first 150 fathers at the zoo, which meant I could spend the cash on the fiscally-inflated but exquisite mini-donuts. When my two-year-old ducked a fence and ran into the open field during the Radical Raptors presentation, I appreciated the presenter not losing his mind at the interruption, nor did the angry-looking owl mistake him for a field mouse and scalp him. The boys absolutely loved the animals, and were especially pleased to not have been sprayed by Boomer the Lion during the show while we ate jam sandwiches. We were disappointed at how lazy the baboons were, but that was mitigated by one of them licking a stick over and over, which resulted in my oldest son accurately accusing them of being nothing but stick-lickers. For myself, I enjoyed being a few feet from predators with only the equivalent of an elementary school baseball diamond backstop between us. My one critique was that the majority of outbuildings gave me the vague feeling of being in an abandoned summer camp. The Expo '86 concrete benches, overgrown with weeds, gave it an especially ominous touch. All in all, I would definitely aim to get in for free again sometime! 4 out of 5 stars.
